Mono Lake State Natural Reserve

Mono Lake State Natural Reserve, situated in California, is recognized for its unique ecological features. The reserve encompasses Mono Lake, a high-salinity body of water, renowned for the presence of tufa towers—limestone formations resulting from the interaction between freshwater springs and alkaline lake water.

One of the reserve's ecological highlights is its role as a vital habitat for migratory birds. During migration seasons, Mono Lake becomes a crucial stopover for thousands of birds, including California gulls and eared grebes. Mono Lake State Natural Reserve is managed with a focus on preserving its unique geological and ecological features.

Yosemite's Picture-Perfect Spot

Nestled within the breathtaking expanse of Yosemite National Park, Valley View stands as a celebrated spot for photography enthusiasts. This viewpoint, situated along the serene Merced River, offers an unobstructed view of Yosemite's legendary landscape. The towering granite cliffs, led by the majestic El Capitan, form a rugged backdrop against the gentle flow of the river, providing an ideal setting for capturing the park's natural splendor.

Photographing Valley View is an authentic experience. From the soft, golden light of sunrise to the warm, soothing hues of sunset, the changing colors and textures of the landscape offer endless possibilities for composition. Here, you can frame the pristine waters, the imposing cliffs, and the surrounding wilderness in your shots, creating images that reflect the raw beauty of Yosemite.

This was undoubtedly one of my favourite spots in the park - I came back again and again to see it in different lights and at different times of the day. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do!

A Tribute to Ansel Adams

When it comes to landscape photography, few places hold the historical significance of Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park. Renowned photographer Ansel Adams, celebrated for his iconic images of American wilderness, immortalized this viewpoint in the early days of landscape photography. Tunnel View offers a breathtaking panoramic view that encompasses iconic features like El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome, all framed by the surrounding trees in a tunnel-like entrance.

Photographing the sunset at Tunnel View is a timeless experience. As the sun descends, it bathes the valley in warm, golden light, casting long shadows and accentuating the rugged beauty of the landscape. As I set up my camera to capture the sunset, I felt like a part of history. I became part of a legacy of photographers who have come here over the years to pay homage to the stunning landscapes that Ansel Adams and others helped immortalize. It's a place where history and natural beauty converge, offering every new photographer the perfect opportunity to create their own photographic masterpiece.

Sunset Views on CA-180

At Kings Canyon National Park, the evening sunsets offer a stunning display of nature's artistry. One of the best places to witness this breathtaking sight is from the comfort of your car along the park's scenic drive, the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. As the sun dips below the horizon, it casts a warm, golden glow across the landscape, turning everything a rich shade of orange.

The scenic drive takes you through a variety of viewpoints and vistas, each offering a unique perspective on the park's beauty. As the sun sets above the mountains, the entire landscape comes alive in the soft, fading light of the setting sun. I enjoyed several viewpoints as we made our way through the valley, chasing the last rays of light as they hid behind the mountains.

A Stop on the Road

We were lucky enough to catch a captivating sunset at the Generals Highway Scenic Overlook on our drive out of Sequoia National Park. This location was a welcome surprise on our travels, as we hadn’t really planned anywhere in particular for sunset and did not have particularly high hopes for it, given that the park is set in a valley. The viewpoint provides an elevated position to witness the sun descending below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the surrounding landscapes and submerging the hillsides gradually in darkness. As day transitions into night, the rolling foothills, lush forests, and towering sequoias become immersed in the serene and enchanting colors of dusk.

End of Day at Moro Rock

Another visit to Moro Rock at Sequoia National Park this weekend, this time in the late afternoon as the haze and the falling sun transformed the skies into a beautiful mixture of oranges and yellows. There was a beautiful lateral light there as well which left half of the valley in light and the other half in shadow. Here, I made full use of my whole photography kit - from wide lenses to capture the expansive valley below, to a telephoto lens aimed at the few trees hugging the mountain ridges. The most incredible thing is that this wasn’t even quite sunset: we still made it down the valley and caught sunset at a different location afterwards.

Scaling New Heights

Moro Rock offers a very different perspective on Sequoia National Park. This towering granite dome offers panoramic views over the whole park - finally placing you above the gigantic trees and changing the whole perspective of the landscape. As you ascend the winding staircase, the world below transforms into a tapestry of lush forests and rugged peaks, and the sprawling landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see. It was really mind-boggling to go from feeling like a tiny ant standing at the feet of the forest giants to seeing them from above, surrounded by the local ravens gliding in the skies.

Night Falls over Banks Lake

In my previous blog post, I hinted that I would be sharing quite a few more images from Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia. This week’s blog post continues on to a peaceful evening at the lake, featuring a little bit of astrophotography. The last two photos are star trail images: compilations of tens or hundreds of images of the night sky, merged together to show the movement of the stars over time. With a clear and unpolluted sky, you can really see how the milky way shifts around across the frames. In this particular place, the brightest stars are also reflected in the still waters, creating mirrored star trails on the surface of the lake.

A Hidden Treasure in South Georgia

We arrived in Valdosta, a small city in south Georgia, with absolutely no expectations of what we would find there. On a spare evening, we opened up Google Maps and searched for “things to see” in the area. Apparently there was a somewhat interesting swamp visible from a boardwalk, so we packed up our camera gear and went to see the sunset. Little did we know what we were about to encounter!

The Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge is truly a hidden gem and was an absolute surprise. We loved it so much that we just kept coming back for more! So be prepared for a few more blog posts featuring this amazing place.

Sunset at the Swamp

This place was so incredible that I feel compelled to share a little more. This time I feature the soft golden light outlining the cypress trees of Stephen C. Foster State Park in southern Georgia. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite catch the sunset, as rental boats need to be returned by 7pm, but we made the most of the three hours we had at this stunning place. Pine Trees at Dusk

I’m very fortunate in that my work allows me to travel all over the world (more recently, throughout the US) and see some amazing places. Over my next few blog posts, I want to share some of the images I took a few weeks ago when I spent some time in southern Georgia and had a free couple of days to explore the surrounding areas.

These first few images are of the pine trees at Stephen C. Foster State Park and the surrounding Okefenokee Swamp area at dusk. I was so surprised by the natural beauty of these swamps; they were completely different from any other place I’ve visited before. Keep your eyes peeled for much more over the coming weeks!

Stars From The Underground

As night falls and darkness covers the land, the New Zealand landscape comes to light. I’m not referring to the stars in the skies of Aotearoa, but to their invertebrate counterparts. Glow worms such as these are abundant in many caves and dells across the country, shining bright to lure their prey. Their bioluminescence is the effect of a chemical reaction where luciferin is combined with oxygen to produce a mesmerizing blue glow...

Pancake Rocks and Their Inhabitants

These rock formations in New Zealand’s West Coast are, of course, named after their looks - they look like stacked rounded layers somewhat resembling pancakes. Pancake Rocks even boasts a suitably-themed pancake-serving café near the entrance to the park. I visited on a stormy evening and, although the weather left much to be desired, the white-fronted terns (Sterna striata) that inhabit this location more than made up for the moody skies.

Lake Matheson Reflections

Lake Matheson is an especially reflective lake due to the dark sediments in its water, which create a perfect mirror on a still day. But beware: even the tiniest bit of wind will cause ripples on the surface of the lake and ruin its picture-perfect reflections.

I must admit that, during my recent trip through the West Coast, I fell in love with this location and this is probably my favourite place in all of New Zealand. I visited this stunning location not once, not twice, but on three separate occasions. Funnily enough, my best images of the lake were all from my very first visit, on a cloudy but still day, both before and during sunset.

A Few Days in Queenstown

Beyond The Remarkables mountain range and Deer Park Heights, Queenstown also boasts many other landscapes. In this post I share a few more of my favourites from my last visit, including views over Shotover River and a pink sunset across the lake.

Sunset at the Sugar Loaf

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Rio de Janeiro is the Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açucar), where you can take a series of cable cars between the mountains and see the city from above. A few years ago, I visited this spot at sunset and came out with several images I am very fond of.

Magical Rio

Today my blog features Rio de Janeiro, my hometown (home-megacity?). Although it suffers from many political and societal problems, Rio is undeniably a beautiful, colourful, and vibrant place. The real magic of the city comes alive at night, as the sun comes down and lights the sky up with a deep orange that perfectly matches the bright city lights. Serra da Capivara Landscapes

The fifth and final blog post in the Serra da Capivara series finally zooms out to showcase the wider beauty of the land, including panoramas of the unique rocky formations in the region. The area contains a wild and beautiful mixture of cliffs, caves, rocks, forests, and vast plains and scrubland. These images were taken in the summer, the driest and hottest time of the year, as is reflected by the dry vegetation.

The Three Bells of Fira

The Catholic Church of Dormition is another famous spot in Santorini. However, it is located in the village of Fira, where the architecture is a bit more mixed and buildings come in light yellow, orange, and pink shades, besides the traditional white. The image of the church is taken from a very narrow staircase, which makes sunset a bit annoying, as it will involve constantly readjusting your tripod as people need to get through… Still, it is definitely worth stopping by this spot for another must-have postcard Santorini moment.

The Windmills of Oia

Another classic part of Oia’s landscape are its white windmills. They are actually part of a villa which can be privately hired. I presume that the residents unfortunately miss out on the very best sunset view in Santorini - that of the windmills themselves, from a nearby hill!

As we were there in the (pre-pandemic) summer, there were countless other tourists around, and with this being a coveted spot, we arrived at the lookout and set up our tripods about 3 hours before sunset to guarantee the best views. It was worth it, as about an hour later, hundreds of other people started trickling in, many with their own large tripods and cameras that they set up alongside us. So if you ever want to capture this iconic view, make sure you plan ahead and arrive early.
